AWD and 4WD are not the same thing
All-wheel drive is designed for slippery pavement and works without you thinking about it. Four-wheel drive is built for low-traction and off-road use and usually needs engaging. For Calgary winters and the drive to the mountains, AWD is the more useful of the two.
Count the seats you will actually use
Third rows vary enormously. In some mid-size SUVs the back row is for children on short trips only. If you need three rows in daily use, sit in it before you commit.
Ground clearance is worth more than badge appeal
Alley access, unploughed side streets and gravel approaches are where clearance earns its keep. Anything under about 180 mm starts to feel low once the snow packs down.
Watch the fuel penalty
A full-size SUV can cost several hundred dollars a month more in fuel than a compact crossover over an Alberta commute. Work that into the payment before deciding on size.
