AWD was an option, not standard
Plenty of Equinoxes were sold as front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive was a paid option rather than standard equipment, so check the individual vehicle instead of assuming. For Calgary winters the AWD versions are the ones worth holding out for.
Know which generation you are looking at
The Equinox changed substantially in 2018, becoming smaller, lighter and more efficient than the 2010 to 2017 cars. Both generations sit on the used market at overlapping prices. Sit in each before you decide which one suits you.
The 1.5 turbo is the common engine
Most later Equinoxes use a 1.5L turbocharged four. It is economical and adequate rather than quick, and it wants its oil changes on schedule. Ask to see service records that show they happened.
It is a commuter, not a tow vehicle
The Equinox is at its best as a daily driver in and around Calgary. Towing capacity is modest and the cargo area suits a family rather than a work load. Match it to how you actually drive.
