Match the truck to the actual job
A half-ton handles most trailers and job-site runs. Once you are towing a fifth wheel or carrying real weight every day, a three-quarter-ton is the honest answer. Buying more truck than you need costs fuel, tyres and payment every month.
Check the towing number for the exact configuration
Cab, box length, axle ratio and engine all change the rating. Two trucks with the same badge on the tailgate can differ by thousands of pounds, so confirm the number for the specific truck rather than the model.
Kilometres matter less than what they were
A highway truck at 200,000 km can be in better shape than a job-site truck at 120,000. Look at the frame, the box floor and the service records, not just the odometer.
Winter capability is not automatic
Four-wheel drive helps you go. Tyres are what stop you. Budget for a proper winter set, especially on a light-loaded pickup where the rear end has nothing over the axle.
