EcoBoost or V8
Most used F-150s run either a 2.7 or 3.5 EcoBoost V6 or the 5.0 V8. The EcoBoost pulls hard and uses less fuel on light duty. The V8 is simpler and tends to be cheaper to keep on the road past 200,000 km. Neither is wrong, but they cost different amounts to own.
Aluminium body, steel frame
F-150s from 2015 onward use an aluminium body over a steel frame. The panels do not rust the way older pickups did, which counts for a lot on salted Alberta roads. The frame still can, so look underneath rather than only at the paint.
Highway kilometres are not work kilometres
An F-150 at 200,000 highway kilometres can be in better condition than one at 120,000 spent on job sites. Look at the box floor, the hitch wear and the service history before you judge the odometer.
Budget for winter tyres
Four-wheel drive helps you pull away. Tyres are what stop you. An empty pickup bed puts very little weight over the rear axle, so a proper winter set matters more on an F-150 than on most vehicles.
